How to make a statement in your kitchen

Spring has sprung, and at this time of year, many of us decide to make changes to our home. However, the thought of embarking on major home improvements can be quite daunting, not to mention potentially very expensive.

But there are many things that you can do to refresh and update your home without too much upheaval or expense. And if your kitchen is in need of a bit of an upgrade, there are various ways that you can not only do this, but also ensure that your kitchen makes a statement and is a true reflection of your personality.

So in this article, we take a look at five ways to make a statement in your kitchen without actually undertaking a complete kitchen refurbishment.

Add a splash of colour

This is one of the easiest and most instant changes to make to your kitchen and the good news is that there are so many ways you can go about it. If there is a colour you would like to bring into your kitchen, here are five things you could try:

  • Create a feature wall

Just changing the colour of one wall can transform the whole look and feel of your kitchen. You could paint the wall or perhaps use a feature wallpaper. Even some wall art in the colour of your choice can make a difference.

  • Repaint one or more kitchen cabinets

Another option would be either to repaint one or more kitchen cabinets or to replace the existing doors with doors in a different colour. Whether you choose to have all one colour, or mix and match, it will look much better.

  • Bring in a small item of furniture

If you have space in your kitchen how about bringing in a small item of colourful furniture, for example, a chair or small chest of drawers. As well as these items having practical use, they could also brighten up a corner of your kitchen.

  • Add open shelving

An open shelf on your kitchen wall can become a real feature of your kitchen. You can curate it to hold items that are special to you and tell a story. As long as the shelf does not become either cluttered or neglected, it can add real interest and a welcome splash of colour to your kitchen.

  • Accessorise

A very quick and easy way to make a statement in your kitchen to accessorise it. And the good news is that you can change the theme of your accessories whenever you want to. So think about adding accessories such as colourful cushions, rugs, tableware, blinds, curtains or wall art to give your kitchen the statement look you are after.

Replace your kitchen worktops

Of course, another way to quickly transform your kitchen and make a bold statement is by replacing your kitchen worktops. Zen Stone supplies a stunning range of kitchen worktops in a wide range of different colours and finishes, to mix or match with the rest of your kitchen.

Even if you change nothing else in your kitchen, brand-new worktops can make it look completely different. A very smart move for an easy kitchen update!

Update your small appliances

Another quick and easy way to make a statement in your kitchen is to update a few of your small kitchen appliances. For example, if you were to replace your kettle, toaster and microwave in either matching or contrasting colours, things would look very different very quickly.

Picture your current kitchen and visualise those small appliances perhaps all in bright red or yellow, dark blue or green, or dramatic black. Just think how different that would look. Or how about a theme rather than exactly the same colour, for example, a mix of pastel shades such as baby pink, pale turquoise and mint green.

Whatever your preference for colour, introducing it just for a few small items can really update the look and feel of your kitchen.

Refresh your crockery

Crockery is such an essential kitchen item yet often gets overlooked when planning how you want your kitchen to look. But just think what a statement you could make if instead of an odd assortment of old mugs, bowls and plates lurking in your kitchen cupboards, you had fun funky items instead.

There are some wonderful crockery ranges available, and it’s fair to say that whatever your passion in life there will be a crockery design to reflect that. And some brand new colourful crockery would also look great if you decide to have open shelving, and would make your kitchen feel much more interesting and tasteful.

Floor it

Never underestimate the impact of your kitchen floor! It takes a lot of wear and tear, and for many of us, our only thoughts about the kitchen floor is that it probably needs a good clean. But paying a bit of attention to your kitchen floor can result in a dramatic improvement to your kitchen.

A simple way to start is just to ensure that the floor is squeaky clean and as clutter-free as possible. Then consider adding one or more rugs to give it a fresh, colourful, bright look. If you do decide on rugs, just make sure that they are non-skid rugs or use rug grippers to weigh them down and stop them sliding.

It can also be quite economical to replace your kitchen floor, and this can transform the look of your whole kitchen. Three flooring options you may want to consider are:

  • Tiled flooring

Stone tiling – such as marble, slate, granite, travertine, ceramic or porcelain – can look absolutely stunning on kitchen floors. Stone tiling is also extremely durable and easy to maintain. Stone tiles are available in many different colours, shapes and sizes, and can be laid in whatever pattern you choose.

  • Wooden flooring

Wooden flooring is another popular choice for kitchen flooring in 2023. It is available in many different shades and textures, and can also be configured in different layouts to work with the design of the rest of your kitchen. An alternative to solid wooden flooring is laminate flooring, which costs less but can look just as good as wooden flooring – and in some ways can be more durable; for example in terms of being waterproof.

  • Vinyl flooring

Another flooring option to consider is vinyl flooring. Contemporary vinyl flooring is very different from how it used to be, and is becoming an increasingly popular flooring alternative. It is available in different shapes and sizes including tiles and planks, so can even mimic the look of wood and stone. Vinyl flooring is also completely waterproof, comfortable to walk on and easy to clean.

So, there are many available options to make changes to your kitchen flooring, which in turn could make a powerful statement in your kitchen and transform the whole look and feel of the room.
